Background

Joe joined the Dordick research group in 2005 after enrolling in the chemical & biological engineering doctoral program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  From 2001-2005 he was enrolled at the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.  In addition to earning a B.S. in chemical engineering, he participated in the Cavalier Road Runners, serving twice as president of the club.  A native of Columbia, MD, he graduated from Hammond High School in 2001.  While in high school he was on the cross-country and track teams, earning multiple MVP awards for his endeavors.  He also was a member of the Boy Scouts, twice serving Troop 75 as senior patrol leader.

Research area

The information revolution at the end of the last century created a shift from older firms in the materials and transportation sectors to information technology that has been described as “Creative Destruction.”  The underlying technology for these new firms was actually advances in materials science culminating in the fabrication of the integrated circuit.  A new materials science, nanotechnology, has been predicted to cause similar upheavals in the industrial landscape.  Currently, protein-nanoparticle conjugates in solution are being characterized. Future investigations may focus on controlled nano-scale topographies and how different types of protein interact with nanoscale supports.
