Research area

Nature gives us enormous chemical diversity derived from the combinatorial pathway of metabolic enzyme repertoire. Drug discovery from the diversity of many natural products have been central in the field of medicinal chemistry 1 and metabolic engineering 2-5. However, many potential drug compounds are not addressable because of trace amounts in natural sources and limit the scope for making chemical modifications to optimize their therapeutic use 6. My research goals are how to answer the following questions.

  1. How can natural products be efficiently accessed?
  2. How can ‘unnatural’ natural products be efficiently generated from different building block?
  3. How can natural products and their derivatives be systematically synthesized?
  4. How can natural products and natural-product-derived molecules be systematically evaluated as drug candidates?
